Paolo Scheggi (1940 - 1971)

With his conception of the painting as a three-dimensional object, Paolo Scheggi was a pioneer. This approach is expressed principally in the multi-layered monochrome works, in which the corporeality of a picture takes precedence over its capacity for representation.

His intention was the spatialisation of the panel painting, ennobling it to being an object in its own right.

Thanks to his metal-assemblages, Scheggi drew the attention of the Italian Avantgarde artist, who became the patron of the young artist and his work. For his “intersuperfici” and “strutture modulari”, he soon reached international acclaim. The works distinguish themselves through uni-coloured, overlapping layers of canvas or cardboard. These plains are perforated by small circular or elliptic holes, which open to reveal further, underlying layers.

During his short life, Scheggi exhibited in numerous galleries and museums and momentarily took up contact with the groups NUL and ZERO, as well as the movement of “New Tendencies”.
