Bram Bogart
Biography
Bram Bogart born in 1921 as Abraham van den Boogaart in Delft, completes an apprenticeship as a painter at the vocational school from 1933 to 1936. In 1935 he applies for a two-year correspondence course in drawing. From 1937 to 1938 he is working as a painter for cinema posters in Rotterdam. In 1939 on he starts a career as independent painter with the support of art dealer Bennewitz. In 1943/44 he applies at the Royal Academy for Fine Arts in Den Haag for six months in order to escape deportation as a forced labourer to Germany. His first solo exhibition takes place at the gallery Bennewitz in Den Haag. From 1951 to 1960 he lives in Paris. In 1955 he exhibits for the first time under the name Bogart in the gallery Raymond Creuze, Paris. In 1958 he meets Emil Schuhmacher, Bernhard Schultze, Karl Friedrich Dahmen and the art critic Manfred de la Motte. Fontana visits Bogart in his atelier in Paris. In 1960 he moves definitely to Brussels. In 1963 he receives the Prize of the Belgian Art Critics Association. In 1969 he acquires Belgian citizenship. In 1987 he is awarded the Prix Jules Raeymakers by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Brussels. From 1988 on he lives in in Kortenbos near St. Truiden. In the 90's several retrospectives take place in Brussels, Oostend and Biarritz. Bram Bogart dies in 2012.
