Paolo Scheggi

Biography

With his conception of the painting as a three-dimensional object, Paolo Scheggi, born 1940 in Settignano in Florence, is a pioneer. In 1958 he attends the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence and in 1960 founds the literary magazine l malinteso. In 1961 he moves to Milan, where he gets in contact with Agostino Bonalumi. In 1965 he becomes staffer for the issue Marcatré, gets acquainted with the group around Azimuth and affiliate to movement nuove tendencije. He cultivates international contacts especially to the scene in northern Europe and exhibits several times in group shows of ZERO and NUL. Since 1968 Scheggi extends his investigations to theater and performing arts. He wants to overcome the traditional stage  and gallery and tranfers his ideas of space also to the city. His work has always an interdisciplinary approach. This approach is expressed principally in the multi-layered monochrome works, in which the corporeality of a picture takes precedence over its capacity for representation. His intention is the spatialisation of the panel painting, ennobling it to being an object in its own right. Thanks to his metal-assemblages, Scheggi drew the attention of the Italian Avantgarde artist Lucio Fontana, who becomes the patron of the young artist and his work from 1962 on. For his intersuperfici and strutture modulari, he soon reaches international acclaim. The works distinguish themselves through uni-coloured, overlapping layers of canvas or cardboard. These plains are perforated by small circular or elliptic holes, which open to reveal further, underlying layers. During his short life, S as well as the movement of New Tendencies. In 1971 Paolo Scheggi dies in Rome.
