The impressive consistency in the reduction of colour and the rejection of any concrete form prevails, even in his early works, as convincingly self-evident, and is followed through right up to his final works. At the end of the 1950s, Girke's compelling style was already clear, rendering light and colour, motion and structure, calm and energy as perpetual elements of his oeuvre.
The early works presented here demonstrate important and pioneering phases of his development, which make him not only one of the influential protagonists of post-War German art, but also an international trailblazer of Analytical and Fundamental Painting.
