Sculptures and masks from Nigeria

Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden, Cragg Foundation, Wuppertal

-

Curated by Tony Cragg and Dierk Dierking.

African sculptures are firmly linked to social, spiritual and religious functions whose course they control, regulate and determine. For this system-stabilising task, African artists have repeatedly invented new, clearly identifiable, impressively overwhelming and sometimes intimidatingly forceful forms. In cooperation with Galerie Dierking, Cologne, Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden is showing 38 objects from south-eastern Nigeria.

The exhibition ...seeks to highlight
the formal quality of these
sculptures and unleash their
cross-cultural potential.

The various population groups that settle in this relatively small region of West Africa have, in mutual rivalry, produced works of great diversity in terms of form, size, medium, use and meaning. The exhibition, curated by Toni Cragg and Dierk Dierking, seeks to highlight the formal quality of these sculptures and unleash their cross-cultural potential.
