Anthony Caro

Biography

Anthony Caro is born in 1924 in New Malden, Surrey, England. Between 1942 and 1944, he studies engineering at Christ’s College, Cambridge, and from 1947 to 1952, he studies sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools in London. During this period, he works as an assistant to Henry Moore, an experience that profoundly influences his artistic vision. In the early 1960s, Caro redefines modern sculpture by creating abstract, large-scale steel constructions that stand directly on the ground, inviting a new spatial dialogue between artwork and viewer. His innovative approach establishes him as one of the foremost figures in post-war sculpture. From 1953 to 1981, Caro teaches at St. Martin’s School of Art in London, where he mentors a new generation of sculptors, encouraging experimentation with material, form, and scale, and significantly influences the future direction of modern sculpture. In 1969, Caro receives the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). In 1975, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, presents Anthony Caro: A Retrospective, which later travels to the Walker Art Center, Houston, and Boston. In 1987, he is knighted. In 1992, he receives the Praemium Imperiale for Sculpture and presents a major retrospective at the Trajan Markets in Rome. In 1997, Caro receives the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center. In 2000, he is admitted to the Order of Merit (OM), one of Britain’s highest distinctions. In 2004, to celebrate his 80th birthday, Tate Britain holds a jubilee tribute exhibition, followed by a full retrospective of his career the following year. In 2013, Anthony Caro passes away in London at the age of 89. Today, Caro’s works are represented in major international collections, including the Tate, London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; and the Centre Pompidou, Paris. His monumental sculptures and collaborative architectural projects continue to shape the landscape of contemporary sculpture worldwide.
