Christian Megert

Biography

Christian Megert is born in Berne, in 1936 and between 1952-1956 he attends there the Kunstgewerbeschule. He creates monochrome structural abstract images and sculptures from iron and synthetic resin at his first exhibition, which takes place in Berne in 1956. After a short residency in Stockholm and Berlin, he moves to Paris in 1958. From 1959 on, he uses shards of glass and mirror in his work. He experiments with the reflective effect of the mirror and its potential to broaden the space. He is one of the first using it as his main medium to investigate the reality. As a result, he mounts mirror fragments either on plates or on metal steles. In 1960 he returns to Bern and cofounds the Nouvelle Ecole Européenee in Lausanne. In 1961 he publishes his manifesto “A New Space” during his exhibition at the gallery Køpke in Copenhagen, where he presented for the first time a spatial environment, a mirror room. As he declares, his intentions were to build “a space without beginning and end, in which everything lives and is called to life. Which is at the same time quiet and loud, motionless and moving”. The same year he becomes member of the ZERO Group and from 1962 on, he organizes their exhibitions in Switzerland. In 1963 he creates light boxes. The objects are made of wood and inside them are placed mirrors and light tubes, which create the illusion of an infinite space. In 1964 he cofounds in Berne the gallery Aktuell, aiming to present the latest art tendencies. From 1965 on, he incorporated also kinetic in his light boxes. He equipped them with glass elements in various shapes, which are rotating. In 1966 he participates at the Biennale of Venice and in 1968 at the Dokumenta IV in Kassel. In 1973 he moves to Dusseldorf. From 1974 on, he focuses on the design of the public space by creating large sculptures made from polished stone and steel, combined with mirrors, which are harmonized with the environment they are placed to. From 1976 to 2002 he is professor at the Department of Fine Art and Architecture at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. He works in Berne and Dusseldorf.
