Hermann Bartels

Biography

Hermann Bartels is born in Riesenburg, West Prussia in 1928. From 1946 – 48 he undergoes an apprenticeship as wood turner, afterwards an apprenticeship as bookseller. He gets private Art Education by the late impressionistic artist Kurt Bernecker. Moreover he attends courses at the Kunstakademie Hamburg by Kurt Kranz. In 1952 he moves to Frankfurt on the Main. During 1955 - 65 the white based Fleckenbilder are created. 1958 he meets Arnulf Rainer. He writes a short essay for the issue ZERO 1 1959 – 63  the monochrom Spachtelbilder, mostly in black or white are created. 1960 he moves to Dusseldorf. 1961 he untertakes a journey to the Netherlands and gets in contact with the group nul 1963 – 65 the Farbstreifen are created. Important workgroups as Parallel-Montagen arise from 1967, the Freiwinklige Combines from 1977 and the Complexes from 1986. 1989 he dies in Dusseldorf.
