Cologne

In space. Works by Otto Boll and Ferdinand Spindel

In the spirit of space-defining art, art in the context of space, Galerie Dierking is showing sculptures by Otto Boll (*1952) and early, monochrome white reliefs by Ferdinand Spindel (1913 - 1980) at this year's Cologne Fine Art booth. Otto Boll's sculptures, some of which are strongly reminiscent of Lucio Fontana's Tagli of his Concetti Speziali, have already found their way to Berlin's Bellevue Palace.

Spindel's and Boll's works
are not only juxtaposed in terms of color,
they also complement
each other in a special way
in terms of material

They are characterized by their restrained yet incredible presence. Almost always, the filigree, blackened metal works taper off, giving the appearance of floating in the open air. The viewer is invited into a new visual experience that incorporates, even defines, space while filling it with a lightness that is difficult to grasp. It is these works that force the viewer to consciously perceive the surrounding space in a new way. Ferdinand Spindel's foam reliefs, which stand in contrast, also fill the space with a presence that must be explored through close observation. For a long time, Spindel's work lay hidden, appearing only here and there in an exhibition. Ferdinand Spindel, who was in close contact with the ZERO group, participated in several exhibitions of this artist movement from 1964 - 66 (including ZERO, Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia | Zero.

An Exhibition of European Experimental Art, Washington Gallery of Modern Art, Washington D. C.) In addition, he organized numerous group exhibitions in the legendary artists' settlement Halfmannshof in Gelsenkirchen. Beginning in 1963, he discovered foam as a material for his work. The organic relief works, his material landscapes, invite the viewer to examine the work more closely. While Spindel's works may at first seem more static than Boll's floating sculptures, they too constantly lead the viewer's eye to new forms through their inner dynamism and challenge the viewer to see again and again. Spindel's and Boll's works are not only juxtaposed in terms of color, they also complement each other in a special way in terms of material. Both artists create and created with their works space-defining and structuring art, which is confirmed by their respective materiality and to whose effect light and shadow contribute their part.

Otto Boll works together with the Galerie Dierking/ Zurich, Schönewald Fine Arts | Düsseldorf and Axel Vervoordt/ Antwerp. He recently gained attention during the 2015 Biennale at Palazzo Fortuny for the outstanding presentation of his work in the show "Proportio" curated by Axel Vervoordt. The artist is actively involved in the booth design. The saleable works of both artists are supplemented by Galerie Dierking with loans from renowned German private collections. Following the autumn fair, Galerie Dierking will realize a solo presentation with Otto Boll in the gallery space at Zurich's Paradeplatz.
