Raimund Girke - Touched in White

-

Through his search for a specifically classical order in the complex world of the colour White, and through his inimitable painterly oeuvre, Raimund Girke (1930-2002) was not just one of post-war Germany’s trailblazing artists, he was also one of the precursors of Analytical and Fundamental Painting. Galerie Dierking is devoting a solo exhibition to Raimund Girke from 14 March to 28 April 2017 in its rooms on Paradeplatz, Zurich, in close collaboration with the artist’s estate. By consistently reducing to a minimum, Girke succeeded is doing justice to what he considered the important artistic questions : structure and colour.

What makes Girke’s works readable
and sensually perceptible is always
a specifically employed dynamism,
be this as a clearly graspable
painterly approach or an apparently
contemplative concentration.

White in particular, the “queen of colours”, served his aim to achieve tranquility and concentration. Thanks to a radical stringency, Girke managed to assert himself against all the parallel trends in art at the time, and against what he called a “total inundation with stimuli”. Raimund Girke focussed on the colour White with impressive consistency and without departing from the abstract path he took at an early stage. In the 1980s, therefore, he made almost monochrome paintings out of which he developed his increasingly loose brushwork and colour structures in the 1990s. Imagination became a component of the painting: a painting’s brushwork structure and painterly rhythm facilitate an extraordinary openness with regard to the viewer.

What makes Girke’s works readable and sensually perceptible is always a specifically employed dynamism , be this as a clearly graspable painterly approach or an apparently contemplative concentration. The exhibition “Raimund Girke – Weiß bewegt” presents oil paintings and works on paper dating from between 1980 and 1995. In addition to the works on sale, the show will also include works on loan from Swiss collections. Girke’s artistic development is manifest in both the large and small works; the 1980s and 90s are generally considered to be his most intensely creative period. This exhibition invites visitors to view the paintings peacefully, to take the time to approach Girke’s art in a meditative way, far from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Light and colour, movement and structure, peace and energy – white moves.
