There from the very Beginning!

Hans Salentin – Early Relief-Works from the ZERO Period

-

With his roof tile reliefs, Hans Salentin is one of the first ZERO artists. He was there from the very beginning, more specifically he was present when ZERO was composed and named, after their 4th exhibition. Piene, Mack and other members came up with the name of this group, after the exhibition in Düsseldorf's old town.

Mack, Piene and Salentin were already fellow students in Paul Bindel's painting class at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. In 1955 they moved together into a studio at Gladbacher street and met Yves Klein in his studio during a trip to Paris. In the years that followed, Salentin repeatedly took part in joint exhibitions, witnessed important actions, and made his specific artistic contribution.

Everyday materials and
found objects are combined
to create works of art.

The latter inevitably includes Salentin's roof tile and zinc reliefs. Three of the roof tile reliefs were reproduced in the 1961 publication ZERO 3 and presented to a wider audience at the Schmela Gallery in Düsseldorf. The exhibition Von Anfang an dabei! Hans Salentin - Early Relief Works of the ZERO Period focuses on Salentin's early sculptural work. In this work, on the one hand, parallels to the ideas of the ZERO artists are visible, on the other hand, aesthetic connections in the form of monochrome and material aesthetics.

Even if Salentin was not equally enthusiastic about all the central ideas of the protagonists, there is a common thread in the attempt to overcome Informel. Everyday materials and found objects are combined to create works of art. Through assemblages, collages, and montages, "objet trouvé" are deliberately transformed into "objet corrigé". Whereby not only the lack of likeness but also the overcoming of polychromy plays an important role. Both the roof tiles and the zinc reliefs are therefore characteristic of the avant-garde idea of ZERO. Thanks to private lenders we have succeeded in showing 5 roof tile reliefs and three zinc reliefs in a concentrated exhibition, and at the same time we are able to offer a roof tile relief for sale.
